Before there was “born again Christianity”, did no one go to heaven?
The “born again” and “saved” brand of Christian insist that you need to ask the Lord to become “born again”. Yet “born again” Christianity has barely been around 100 years. So what about all the Christians that came before that? What happened to them?

All the labeling means nothing as the only thing that is the truth is stated in the Bible. As stated in the Bible those who God graces with His faith to believe and to know Jesus is His Son and died on the cross for our sins and then is filled with the Holy Spirit to become like Jesus will be with Jesus in heaven. No tagged name is required for this, no label whether designer or from the thrift store matters here my friend. It is all about faith and His grace.

The theology of being born means to have accepted Jesus as your savior. The term being born again may be recent, but acceptance of Jesus Christ has been around as long as Christianity has been around.

“Born again” seems to have become a brand, but the original use comes from John 3 where Jesus tells Nicodemus he must be born again to get to heaven. The spirits of all those who died trusting in the coming savior we’re “born again” and waited in Paradise, aka Abraham’s Bosom (the air conditioned side of hell) until Jesus came for them after His death. Upon His resurrection he took them all to heaven. Since then the spirits of all who die trusting in Jesus for their salvation go immediately to be with the Lord.

If you repented, and turned to God to be Saved

Well, that’s because the fundies have twisted the meaning of being “born again”. Traditional Christians (such as CATHOLICS) understand being “born again” to mean baptism.

There is no “born again Christianity”. In Christianity when one gets baptized by immersion (under water like Jesus) they are born again because when a priest does a baptism correctly and you go under water and brought back up it is like being born as a baby and all your sins are washed away. People who walk around and for what ever reason they proclaim their born again as they have found Jesus or God is NOT a true “born again”. Just like “faith without works is dead”, saying “I’m born again and Christian without the baptism is just lip service”.

Catholics (Christians) are “born again” in baptism and “saved” from the eternal punishment due to Original Sin and all their past personal sins.
In baptism, they enter a state of grace and, if they remain in that state to the end by avoiding mortal sin, they will inherit eternal life.

I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8),

but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12),

and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15).

Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12),

with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13).

I think it is more precise to say there may be many baptized who don’t make it to heaven.

Incorrect assessment. I do understand what you mean by the recent “born again Christian” concept, but Jesus himself said that being born again was a prerequisite for eternal life.

The way I see it, “heaven” is eternal…it is a place reserved for immortal beings…a mortal being can’t exist there. Given that premise, I would say I suspect that before Jesus suggested that it was even possible for a human being to be born again, that all humans were mortal. God certainly could have chosen to transform one or more of those mortal humans into immortal beings before that, but no, in the absence of a direct intervention by God, before there was “born again Christianity”, as introduced and defined by Christ himself, no one went to “heaven”…they all simply died.

I find it interesting that so many people interpret the message of Jesus (and the rest of the bible too) as an offer to save their immortal soul from hell instead of an offer to give them that immortal soul in the first place. I’ve searched for many years and I just can’t find any biblical reference that explains how or when Adam (or one or more of his descendants) found a way around that fiery sword to get back to the “Tree of Life” that God took away from Adam and Eve when he sent them out of the garden…can’t find it…at least not until Jesus offered to give it to us in return for doing what Adam and Eve failed to do…putting our faith in God.
