Does it irk you that Christianity is under “Religion” in the bookstore but Wicca and other religions aren’t?
I’ve noticed that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are all under the label of “Religion” with a whole big section to itself, but Wicca, Buddhism, Druidism, Hinduism, Taoism, etc are all crammed together and mixed up in a tiny corner of the bookstore half the size of the “Religion” section and labeled “New Age.”
@nietzsche: Druidism is not Eastern, it’s European.

New Age?

Those are older. How can they possibly be considered new age.

“Religion” is that which concerns the supernatural. The supernatural isn’t real.

Buddhism is a logical and practical path to happiness during ones lifetime. No heaven, no ghosts, no miracles, just straight happiness. I’d find it odd if they put it in the religion section.

Complain to the manager. Bookstores want to sell books, not make any statements of politics or faith.

I don’t know. In my local bookstore, we have three shelves for Christianity, one shelf for Judaism, and a half a shelf for Islam, Wicca, and the rest labeled “Religion”.

Hi I’m Wiccan and I worship the Devil.

But seriously, uhm I never knew that, but now that I do, that bothers me a bit. I’ve never gone shopping for Wicca books, or any other of the “New Age” books, so I wouldn’t know, but that’s ridiculous.

Because Wicca is a new age religion. Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion. Taoism is a religion that appeals to new agers. Many aspects of Hinduism are part of new age beliefs. Christianity is a religion, plain and simple.

Because Buddhism, Druidism, Hinduism, Taoism, etc are considered as New Age Eastern philosophies not relgion. That is why.

It doesnt bother me one bit, as a Pagan who has been practicing since before Paganism became “accepted” and wouldn’t have been able to find a book on Wicca or Paganism in a freakin bookstore at all, it’s nice simply that they stock them.

Who really cares where the books are, as long as they stock them? Many bookstores place the books according to the publishers ‘sectioning’ of them if you look on the back of many books on these topics they will have either ‘self help’ or ‘new age’ written in the section where it states the genre of the book.

If it really bothers you then nicely and polietly (remembering that you may be the first Pagan they have met and you’ll be representing us all) explain to the owner that these books are about a religion and it would be a better representation of the books subject matter if they were placed in the religion section.

However when it comes down to it, the store is owned by them and they can place the books anywhere they like…..just be thankful they are not the type of people to be that judgemental that they choose not to sell books on these subjects.

Yeah, when I first went looking for books on Wicca, tarot, and other related things, I jumped into the Religion section, only for them not to be there! I thought Wicca was a legally recognized religion, and yet, they put the books on Witchcraft and Wicca in the New Age section? Wicca is not some New Age fad. Why do people do that, put Wicca books in with the New Age section? And it was in Barnes and Noble, too. I guess our bookstores have something in common.

Not especially. People have come to think of revival or reconstruction religions as new age. It makes better sense to put the books where people will think of looking for them rather than mixing them in with the ‘Big Three’.

What annoys me is the collection of spellbooks, hack introductory material and completely inaccurate money-grabbers being sold alongside Wicca, Taosim, etc…

In my bookstore, the Abrahamic religions are in a section called Religion and Spirituality and all of the other religions are in a section called Metaphysical/Self-help on the other side of the store. It used to be that way in my local library, but in the early 90′s they moved all the Metaphysical books into the religious section.

On some level that does “irk” me as you put it, but in reality there is nothing I can do about it. It’s just one of those little pinches we must grin and bear as part of the cost we pay for practicing a so-called “alternative” religion. On a larger scale I just feel lucky to have the right to make my own spiritual choices, be as open as I please about it and have access to published material regardless of where it is shelved.

Hey Christianboy and Ifyouknewscriptures…, Just exactly WHEN did God assign to you the authority to judge others? Also, WHY was this authority NOT announced to the whole world, either within the Bible or in some other notice to the human race? You have NO authority to do so and because you ARE, you are committing just as much “Wickedness as the wickedness that you are accusing others of being involved in. When you point at others to cast blame and judgment, remember that there are three other fingers on that same hand that cast blame and judgment right back towards the accuser.

Rebekkah, yes, it DOES make me feel hurt when I see that; but, like the others, I am simply grateful that there are SOME books about my Faith SOMEWHERE inside that shop. I can remember when such texts simply could not be found any where for any price, at least in MY neck of the woods. So, even though discrimination still continues in many facets of the lives of members of other Faiths, an awful LOT of progress HAS been made. For that I am most appreciative and we can still continue to work on educating others and include bookstore owners and the directors of the major bookstore chains as well. We have won many battles, however the struggle will be ongoing for a long long time. Celebrate each victory with gusto; but, do not rest until everyone obtains equal treatment in ALL facets of life.

In my local bookstore, only Wicca is lumped in with New Age. And it happens to be just as big a section as religion.

It does irk me, but not on the bookstore’s part. They’re only being marketable. The truth of the matter is, Wicca has been diminished so much in the general eye of the public, and it is the fault of other Wiccans. I totally understand why so many people do not view Wicca as a religion considering all the wacky things that come out of some Wiccan’s mouths.
