Is the word “Protestant” in the Bible?

Is the word “Protestant” in the Bible?
What about Baptist? A Baptist neighbor told me they are in the Bible and go back to the time before Jesus. Yet my pastor said they did not “exist” till the 1600s.

A Baptist is a member of the Protestant denomination, I just thought I’d clear that up.

Protestants were part of a movement against the corruption of the Catholic church known as the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther. This was around 1517 onward.

I think it is logical to say that the term Baptist and Protestant didn’t occur until the 1550′s – 1600s. I don’t think that whoever wrote the Bible was intent on the label so much as the ideals behind it.

No *denomination* is mentioned…. the ONLY tittles mentioned are Jews, Pagans, heathens, *the church*, *the bride*, Christian….. Where people get the notion that Jesus or God made any certain or specific *denomination* is beyond me…. go in peace…. God bless

the bible teaches that the way to be saved is to repent and trust in jesus christ– “walk with” jesus, have a personal relationship with our creator God. it doesn’t have anything to do with what you call yourself, or any denomination.

no… a protestant is anyone who protests against the catholic church. and since the first protestant church wasn’t until around the 16th century… well i think it was around the 16th century… either way, it’s not in the bible. and the only Baptist is John the Baptist… he wasn’t actually in the Baptist religion. He baptized people. lol

Protestant is not in the Bible, the word simply means protester. It was a movement of Christians in protest of some of some of the methods of Catholicism. They were protesters or protestants. Baptist developed out of the Anabaptist–which is a group that advocates re-baptism. They question the concept of infant baptism.

There is a John the Baptist but it would be better translated “John the Baptizer”.

The word “Protestant” does NOT appear in the Bible.

“Protestant” originally referred to “non-Catholic” religions. In 1517, Martin Luther, a Catholic priest, “protested” some 92 practices of the Catholic Church. On October 31st, he posted a list of these practices — called the Ninety-Two Theses — on the church door of Wittenberg, Germany. This action nearly cost him his life.

The Catholic Church would not budge; neither would Luther — stating that he had to be true to the Word of God. . As a result, he left the Catholic Church, which action essentially began the Church Reformation.

Within the word “reformation” you will see “reform.” The Church Reformation was just that; a “reforming” of the church. If you look closely, you will also see the word “protest” within the name “Protestant.” Luther “protested” the practices of the Catholic Church; hence, he was no longer a Catholic, but a “Protestant.” (“protester,” “protestant”)

There is a huge history — far too large to include here, but which you can follow more completely by searching Google (or any other good search engine). I include a website at the bottom of this Answer to get you started with your study.

The story of Martin Luther is extremely interesting. He was a staunch Christian, believing in absolute adherence to the Word of God. As he studied, he became convinced that Salvation was of the Grace of God, and could not be either bought or earned. It was purely and entirely a gift of God to a repentant sinner. (Therefore, he completely PROTESTED everything the Catholic Church taught.)

An added bit of info : Martin Luther wrote his famous hymn , “ A Mighty Fortress is Our God “ during this time, as he hid for a year in a monastery — a “fortress.” You can find pictures of it online. And, yes, Martin Luther King was named for him.

As for “Baptists,” the Bible refers to “John, the Baptist,” which some say refers to the fact that he baptized converts to Christianity. To this day, Baptists baptize by immersing the convert completely. (Greek “baptizo” means “to immerse”). I know of no other religions specifically spoken of in Scripture.

A study of mainline Christianity might prove helpful here. Check into how Methodists got their name (Hint : Methodist was originally a derisive term!). Also Presbyterian (John Calvin) and Lutherans (That’s a hard one : Martin Luther!) : )

A good search engine will help you with, not only your search of Martin Luther, but all these other questions, too. As you can see, far too much info for Yahoo Answers.
