What are the origins of the word “Baptist”? Did the original Baptist get “bapped” in the head by God?

Dori: I’m pretty sure it’s a word! It’s so onomotopeia (sp?!). God might’ve dun BAP’d them on tha haid with faith in the LAWD.

Cute. The word actually comes from the the Greek “baptidzo” which originated in the cloth industry in ancient Lebanon. It carries the connotation of something being immersed into a liquid, so that the thing immersed takes on the characteristics of that which it is immersed into, such as cloth into dye or leather into tanning solution.
There is a Jewish antecedent to the practice of immersion – so it’s safe to assume that John didn’t suffer heat stroke in the Judean wilderness and invent the idea in his delirium.

It originated with John the Baptist who chose water baptism as a sign of the new faith. The Law and the Prophets were being taught until John – after this, the kingdom is being preached. John didn’t work with the established faith groups of his day. He stood on his own and was kind of a wild card. He practised in the arid and dry Dessert, away from cities and towns (Make the paths straight in the dessert). The scholars of the Law didn’t accept John as legitimate. They would send out spies to see what he was saying. I think they were a little afraid of him, seeing he was one that they couldn’t control by threats of death. He said what he thought.

The London Baptist Confession of 1644. I will quote below:

“London Baptist Confession of 1644

A CONFESSION OF FAITH of seven congregations or churches of Christ in London, which are commonly, but unjustly, called Anabaptists; published for the vindication of the truth and information of the ignorant; likewise for the taking off those aspersions which are frequently, both in pulpit and print, unjustly cast upon them. Printed in London, Anno 1646.”

Prior to this, there was no Baptist church. After this, those who practiced adult baptism were called “Ana-Baptists”, meaning “second immersion”, refering to the practice of baptising someone as an adult who had been baptized as a child.

“Baptist” as a denominational name comes from a group of pacifists that lived in and near Switzerland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

One distinctive of this group is that they believed that a person had to make a conscious decision to follow Jesus Christ before they were baptized. For this reason, they baptized adults after they had confessed their faith.

This practice was derided by nearby Christian groups (Catholic and Protestant alike) who baptized infants, and they labeled this group as Anabaptists (“rebaptizers”). The term was later shortened to Baptist.

Denominations that come from the Anabaptist movement are Baptists, Mennonites, and Amish (the Grace Brethren may also find their heritage in this group).

Marji has a good answer… To her answer I would add that Baptists do not believe that immersion is required to be saved, but is a sign of salvation. You are making a public profession of your faith when you are baptised. Baptists differ from other believers mainly because they believe baptism is to be done by immersion and not by sprinkling of water (like Catholics and Methodists).

Also I think you are confusing the “word” bap with the real word bop. Little Bunny Fu Fu bopped the field mice on the head… not bapped.
