The answer to your question is yes. It’s arrogance and bad behaviour. If people say they are Christians, chances are they are. Nobody but you has the right to tell you if you’re a Christian. Some holier-than-thou fundamentalist is probably the last person who should be judging you.

The Westboro Baptists are as Christian as the rest if there is no counterfeit Christianity.

Here’s what the Bible has to say about counterfeit Christianity:

“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:9). This is a warning about ‘the man of lawlessness’ who will come prior to Jesus’ second coming and whose sole purpose is to oppose everything that is of God and who “sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God” (verse 3).

During the first century, the early Christian church was alerted to counterfeit Christians: “I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him” (1 John 2:26-27).

It is the Holy Spirit who teaches Christ’s followers and it is the Holy Spirit who produces in believers a changed life, the fruit of the Spirit. Bottom line is a counterfeit Christian is someone who claims to be a Christian but has not been born-again by the Holy Spirit. God’s word tells us to be on the look-out for such persons who would deceive us. Just because a person claims to be a Christian is insufficient evidence to prove they really are a Christian.
