No, and it was the product of the East-West Schism. It is very similar to Catholicism, but not the same thing.

It is not. In 1054, there was a split in Christianity that geographically roughly corresponded to the Western and Eastern parts of the Roman Empire. The Western or “Latin” branch of Christendom is Catholicism. The Eastern or “Greek” became Eastern Orthodox.

The basic differences were over church governance and the use of icons in worship.

It’s not quite Catholic — but it’s very, very close.

It’s so close in fact, that we Catholics can meet our weekly Mass attendance requirement by attending an Eastern Orthodox liturgy.

And Eastern Orthodox Christians can meet their weekly obligation by attending our Sunday Masses.

We can also receive Communion at each other’s churches, and go to confession to each other’s priests.

That’s because Catholic and Eastern Orthdox doctrines are virtually identical — and we have the exact same sacraments.

The Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches have been in schism since the 11th century.

They are not in theological schism, though — they are in schism only with regard to earthly ecclesiastical authority.

The Catholic Church has had 22 ecumenical councils, the most recent one being Vatican II in the 1960s. The Eastern Orthodox churches recognize the authority of the first 10 of these councils — and it was at these councils that virtually all of Catholicism’s doctrines were formally defined.

Thus, they are almost in complete theological union with us.

The Catholics and Othodox were one Church until 1054
and they share about 98% of doctrine

Papal claims to universal juisdiction and infallibility,
the “Filioque’ that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son

The Byzantine Catholic Church ,which is in communion with the Pope of Rome, is fully Catholic and in spirituality, liturgy and custom is usually identical with its Eastern Orthodox equivalent

Almost.

The Orthodox and Catholic Churches were one and the same until they separated from one another in 1054 mainly over the role of the Pope.

There are very few theological differences. The main difference is that the Orthodox Churches (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11329a.htm) use the Byzantine Rite (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04312d.htm) and the Catholic Church use the Roman or Latin Rite.

Another difference is the Filioque clause in the Nicene Creed, the original which the Orthodox follow is
“And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.”
And the Catholic revision is:
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.”
