Why would a High School have a “Blue Devil” as a mascot?

Why would a High School have a “Blue Devil” as a mascot?
I noticed the local high school in my area was having a car wash to raise money for the “Blue Devils” football team. They were wearing shirts with an evil blue Demonic creature on them. Is this appropriate for a public school? Why don’t the Christian students complain?
